Natural remedies for Hay Fever

Hay fever is a very common condition found in one in five people and it usually become a problem between late March and early September when pollen count tends to be at its highest. Hay fever is caused by a fine powder found in plants that is used for their reproduction cycle, it can cause the eyes, nose, throat and sinuses to be irritated.

Symptoms of Hay Fever

Hay Fever symptoms may sometimes resemble that of a cold which includes; a runny nose, and sneezing. Beyond that, symptoms include: itchy eyes, nose ears and mouth, headaches, loss of smell. But unlike cold symptoms tend to last for weeks. Here are some natural remedies we can recommend for battling Hay fever:

Acupuncture

Dr. Benno Brinkhaus conducted a study with three groups included a control group. The group that undertook 12 sessions of acupuncture reported having less symptoms of hay fever and depended less on antihistamines.

Vaseline

Rubbing Vaseline around the nose and eye are can prevent symptoms of hay fever by trapping the pollen released by plants before it reaches the eyes and nose.

Essential oils

Adding essential oils to a cream or lotion of your choice and massaging it on the side of the nose, temples and forehead. For every 30ml of carrier base use 5 drops of essential oil. The essential oils that can be used to battle hay fever include Basil, Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Rosemary, Thyme Sweet.

Herbal tea

Incorporating herbal tea into your diet is easy and low cost. Certain teas that can be used against hay fever are green tea, chamomile, elderflower, ginger, peppermint and anise to improve symptoms.

Meditation

This section of the series is about meditation. Meditation is the practice of engaging your mind to focus on a certain thought, activity or object to increase your mindfulness and mental clarity. This often requires one to create a state of calm in a silent environment for a period of time to concentrate on what you want as deeply as possible. Meditation often forces us to gain a certain awareness and perspective that can ultimately help us to mange life better whether it be mental health, emotions, stress or focus. All in all, meditation allows you to understand yourself better which will inevitably help you grow into a better person.

How to Meditate?

Meditation is free and requires no additional equipment, anyone can do it. Before beginning it is ideal to find a quiet safe place where you won’t be interrupted, allocate a time period for your meditation, if you are just starting out it would best to keep it between 5 to 10 minutes. When getting into position it is best to chose a position you can hold for a while such as sitting in a comfortable chair, crossed legged on the floor or lying down. Once you are settled start to focus on your breath going in and out in order to calm your mind, if you feel your thoughts start to wander do not worry just acknowledge the thought and bring your attention back to your breathing. Once you feel relaxed and focused start to think about anything you feel you need to confront or bring awareness to. When you decide to wrap up slowly transition your awareness to your surroundings and take note of the emotions and thoughts that have arisen. If you feel like you need a bit more guidance you can find plenty of guided meditation videos online to follow.

Meditation can help to tackle stress to bring inner peace. In the long run meditation can remove the negative emotions that consume your everyday life, it permits you to focus on the present which eliminates anxiety. In addition, research suggests that meditation can be used to battle symptoms of certain medical conditions including anxiety, asthma, chronic pain, sleep problems, high blood pressure and more. Aside from this meditation promotes positivity and a positive mindset will always make everyday life easier. Interview with Aesthetics by Silvie

Aesthetics by Silvie is a professional medical service that offers rejuvenating non-surgical facial aesthetic treatments and skincare. Silviya Ivanova is the lead clinician and founder of Aesthetics by Silvie. She holds a remarkable background with a MSc Public Health, BSc Adult Nursing, BSc Midwifery and is certified in Nurse Independent Prescribing with additional training in medical aesthetics treatments. We interviewed Silviya to get a detailed insight into aesthetics treatments and Silviya’s service at the Maple Leaf Clinic.

Could you tell us a little about facial aesthetics and how treatments work?

The facial aesthetic treatments, I offer, are mainly medically based procedures that restore and rejuvenate the face. The medically based, injectable treatments work to improve and enhance facial features and replenish lost volume by hydrating, defining, and reshaping facial contours. Results manifest as subtle but noticeable enhancement to the overall look of the face. The two main treatments are Botox and Dermal filler injections. Botox (botulinum toxin) is a prescription only medications which works on muscles to relax them, thereby helping to smooth out wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions, such as crow’s feet (around the eyes), frown and forehead lines. Dermal fillers can be used to fill lines and folds (such as nasolabial lines), to replace lost volume (as in the cheeks) and to contour and shape facial features such as the lips, nose, chin and jawline. A different type of dermal fillers, often called skin boosters, can be used to re-hydrate the skin and improve its appearance and elasticity over time. Other specialised procedures for skin rejuvenation include: chemical peels and collagen induction therapy, such as medical microneedling and platelet rich plasma (PRP).  PRP can also be used for hair restoration where there are some existing hair follicles. Medical grade skin care is also important for the maintenance of good overall skin health and treatment of skin issues such as acne and hyperpigmentation.

What makes you passionate about delivering this service?

I had the vision of offering an aesthetic service that as well as being clinically safe and effective is also affordable and offers good value for money. I feel that everyone who is bothered by changes in their looks with age or is looking for an improvement in the facial symmetry or skin issues should be able to access such services and comprehensive, non-obligatory advice on them. That is why I offer free consultations and respond to all client queries directly myself. My treatment ethos is to enhance and restore and not exaggerate facial features. I believe that an aesthetic treatment should be as individual as we all are and as such the aim should be not perfection or fitting into stereotypical images but a tailor-made correction.  I feel passionate about recreating a rejuvenated look for my clients which brings out the best of their personality and helps them to feel confident on the inside and out. I see my treatments as opportunity to enhance not just the physical but the emotional and social well-being, and from personal experience I know that when we enhance our looks we enhance our souls too. I also believe that knowledge is power and in medical aesthetics – a much necessary safety tool too. I am committed to continual professional development and, as well as achieving several academic degrees and qualifications, I continue to attend numerous health and aesthetic courses. As a medical professional, having worked in diverse care settings and continuing to work for the NHS, in my aesthetic clinic I use clinical skills, medical knowledge and experience of dealing with a wide variety of complex situations, which I belief is necessary for the safety of aesthetic injectables and also for dealing with any unforeseen complications that could arise.

What does a typical treatment look and feel like?

This would depend on the type of treatment. I will describe the most popular treatment here – Botox injections, which is a prescription only treatment. In the UK only medical doctors, dentists, prescribing nurses and pharmacist, who have medical aesthetic training, can issue these prescriptions. Before the treatment patients have a consultation with me, as a Nurse Independent Prescriber, where I review their medical history and we discuss their ideas and expectations for the treatments, this is important for setting realistic expectations whilst also making sure that the treatment will be right and safe for them. From there we develop a treatment plan based on their budget and needs. I only proceed to prescribe and book their treatment if I am sure that it will benefit the client. Just to add, I also see my consultations as a means of allowing clients to connect and develop trust in me to deliver their treatment, which is equally important for their overall satisfaction with the treatment outcome. Most Botox treatments take about 30 mins and involve making several injections. The actual injections take around approx. 5 minutes, but I take extra care to prepare the client by making them feel comfortable, going through their understanding of the procedure again, and preparing the skin by disinfecting and marking the exact treatment areas. The Botox injections usually tend to be well tolerated without the need for anaesthesia because they are relatively superficial and delivered quickly yet precisely. However, I do offer the option of anaesthetic numbing cream beforehand to clients who may benefit from it. After most treatment clients can return to their usual activities with some precautions, such as avoiding strenuous exercise and overheating.

How long do the effects last after treatment?

This depends on the treatment. For Botox injections, the effect is not visible immediately but it takes 10-14 days for the full effects to be seen, the treatment effects last 3-4 months. The treatment can then be repeated to maintain the results.  Dermal Filler treatment effects tend to last 9-18 months depending on the treated site and type of filler. In more mobile areas, such as the lips, the dermal filler is metabolised quicker and the duration is 6-9 months on average. I offer free post treatment reviews and follow up appointments as required. The effects of other treatments, such as skin boosters and collagen stimulation therapy, is seen over time, most of these therapies require a course of several sessions to achieve optimum results.

4 Tips on How to Adjust to the Time-Change This Spring

 

Moving the clock forward one hour in the spring means we lose an hour of sleep this can throw off your body clock. Here’s some information on how it can affect your body and ways to counteract it.  

The body has its own internal body clock that it uses to regulate sleep. It can take your circadian rhythm up to 7 days to adjust to time changes disrupting your sleep and waking patterns in the process.  

Those with underlying health issues may feel more disputed by the time change than those who don’t. The 2001 National Institutes of Health study showed statistics that after the springtime shift there is a sudden increase in heart attacks and fatal car accidents; this is often due to the fact that gaining or losing an hour of sleep can leave some feeling groggy and irritable. For some the adjustment is easy-going but for others it may take some time.

“In a nation that is already sleep deprived, losing an extra hour can make a huge impact,” says sleep specialist Harneet Walia, MD. 

Here are some tips to stay at your best during daylight saving times time changes: 

1. Follow a bedtime routine 

It is ideal to get at least 7 hours sleep a night days before and after the time change. Making sure your body and mind are in the right state is important before bedtime. Take care to not engage in any activities that may increase your heart rate before bed such as, exercise at least 4 hours before. Avoid caffeine at least 6 hours before bed and alcohol in the evening. Turn off mobiles and electronics at least an hour before bed as their light inhibits melatonin which is the hormone that needs to be released for sleep. 

2. Maintain your schedule 

Going to bed at the same time every day and waking up at the same time every day will lower the effects of the time change on your body as you stick to a routine. Do not fall victim to staying up later or changing your habits.  

3. Make some changes to your diet 

Closer to time change try and eat at the same times every day. It is best to avoid carbohydrates and increase protein intake some good protein sources besides meat include fish, nuts, seeds and dairy.  

4. Keep naps short 

Whilst it may be tempting to take a long nap especially if the time change leaves you feeling lethargic but avoid this as it could affect your body’s ability to adjust to the change. If you do feel you need some extra rest, take a power-nap no longer than 20 minutes as early as possible in the day.
